I Believed Him
I remember it clearly. We were standing in the chapel underneath the dormitory. It was near the back door on the left. I had just finished playing for a rehearsal and I was headed to another activity. I don’t remember where I was headed but for some reason, he stopped me.
The beginning of our conversation is fuzzy now because it was more than 25 years ago. But, I remember the point in our conversation where he said,
“Robert, I see you as more than what you are doing now. I see you as a leader.”
I remember knitting my eyebrows and looking at him like Whatchu talkin’ bout Willis.
He went on.
“Every time I see you, I enjoy hearing you play. But, I keep seeing this picture of a guy hiding behind a keyboard when he really should be out in front. These people who are leading now, they don’t have anything more special than you do. As a matter of fact, the only reason some of them are there is because you don’t realize how powerful YOU are yet!”
I thought he was a little bit crazy. I wondered why he was saying this stuff to me. It was out of the blue and when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see the aura he saw.
“He’s just trying to pump me up or something. He’s going to ask me to do something and he wants me to say yes.”
My mind worked hard to come up with reasons and scenarios for why he would approach me with this.
To this day, I’m still not clear what he saw. But, I’m glad he saw it. I went on to form and lead several groups, write music, produce an album, start 4 businesses and more.
I’m not sure what he saw at that moment, but a part of me believed him. It made a huge difference.
Thanks, Jerome!
