Day 5

What do you want to accomplish? It’s scary for some to answer this question because it requires making a commitment to success. It’s even scarier to answer it out loud and in public. But, that’s just what needs to be done. I went to research the likelihood of success if you stated your goals out loud and found, surprisingly, that there were rationales for both stating out loud and keeping quiet. One of those rationale’s came from my friend, Derek Sivers. He did a Ted Talk in 2010 on why you should keep your goals to yourself. His research centered around the idea that when you tell someone your goals, your mind actually begins to feel like you’ve made progress and it’s already done. However, this also seems to focus on receiving acknowledgement from others about said goals.

My rationale for doing it out loud is simply the fear factor. Most of the time, we keep things to ourselves. Without diving into research, I know from personal experience that keeping something to myself can be rationalized into it not existing. You know the deal. It never came out of my brain so there was no proof. We get used to this and it becomes harder and harder to focus on what it is we actually want to achieve. Saying in your mind, “you know, I really should go to the gym,” and putting on your calendar, “Go to gym at 9pm” are very different. With the latter, you are reinforcing a decision. So, the courage to come out of your comfort zone to state something publicly is powerful.

In essence, the focus is on courage-building rather than simply reaching the goal. Of course, there is some personal pressure once you have stated the goal out loud. But, that’s not a bad thing. Seeing it written and stating it out loud are additional methods of reinforcing the future you.

Now, if you were to think about the next 12 months, what would it look like?

Day 5 Prompt: What do you want to accomplish most?

Over the past few days you’ve looked at barriers, you’ve figured out why, you’ve created your perfect day and you’ve considered perspectives. These are all items placed in your tool belt. Now, it’s time to begin designing the blueprint for the house you are building.

But, I’ve already started building…you say.

Great. You’re ahead of the game. But every great building requires the foundation to be revisited. If there are cracks then the building will eventually crumble. So, this is the time to check where you are and determine next steps. Add concrete if necessary.
