Day 10

It was somewhere around 1996. I had been driving to work and everyday after I left my apartment, I would pass the station. WEIM! The call letters would catch my attention every time. They weren’t just call letters for the station. They seemed to be calling me! No matter how many times I passed, I would read the letters out loud. In my mind, they kept saying, “Robert, Robert, Rooooooobeeeerrrrrrrrt! Come on in!”

One day, I bit the bullet and went in. I asked to see the owner. When the receptionist said asked who she should say was here, I said, “Tell him Robert Kennedy is here to see him.” She tilted her head for a moment and smiled.

A few minutes later, the owner came out with a smile on his face and bellowed, “so where’s this famous guy?”

I slowly raised my hand as he motioned for me to come over to his office. His name was Frank.

As I entered Frank’s office, I felt like I was on the set for Happy Days. I noticed all of the old pictures from the old days… you know, when the world was still in black and white. There were some great shots of Frank with politicians, celebrities who he had taken pictures with and who signed the photos. It was like a burnt red museum. That office just had a “feeling.”

Frank and I spoke for 30 minutes or so and I let him know I was interested in radio. By the end of the conversation, he had offered me an internship at the station with the current news anchor.

I worked with the news anchor for about 8 months and started to get better at broadcasting. I still have my FCC license.

After 8 months, the news anchor decided to take another position in upstate New York and Frank called me in to offer me the position. He told me the hours it would be and what it would take to be successful at the position. Then he told me what the pay would be.

It all freaked me out! I couldn’t imagine doing it without Larry, the current anchor. I didn’t think I knew enough. What if I messed up, LIVE, ON AIR? I had done that before but Larry was there to cover me. I wasn’t ready!

I turned Frank’s offer down.

WHAT??

DO OVER! Rewind please!

I don’t regret my life at all but if I knew then what I know now. That’s the one moment I want back.

What about you? Do you have any of those? I can only speculate about the difference it would have made but I know it would have been different. I don’t live in regret and I’m not suggest you do either. But, what would you do if you could re-live just one moment in your life?

Day 10 Prompt: What is your do-over moment? Write about it as descriptively as you can.

There is nothing you can do today about the past. But sometimes it can be helpful to re-assess a missed event so you know how to respond if that situation ever arises again. What can you learn from a missed opportunity? The biggest thing you can learn is what to do next time.

Instructions for today:

  1. Write a reply to the prompt for today. Use your own website blog, a wordpress.com blog or here on Medium.com.
  2. Link to this post in your own blog post.
