The Moment I Hugged Freedom

Schedules, routines, and habits are critical for growth. Discipline is essential to success. No one reaches their ultimate success without repetition. Find what works and then do it repeatedly. Or become interested in something and build it little by little until it works.

However, every once in a while, it’s good to toss the schedule.

I went to a resort for some self-care. When I arrived, I initially looked at the available self-care options and began to think about when I would do them.

But, I realized I wasn’t there to schedule my life. I was there to decompress, rejuvenate and recalibrate.

So, I plugged my phone into the wall and left the room.

I walked. And walked. And walked some more. I ended up doing a few miles around the resort, talking to myself and to God. I expressed gratitude for my life and the opportunity to have the time away.

I came back to the resort and sat for dinner…by myself.

There I was at the table, alone, with no phone, no one else.

Honestly, at first, it felt a bit awkward. No, not the being-by-myself part. I felt awkward without my phone. I’m used to being by myself. I have no problem with sitting and watching a movie or eating alone. But, I’m used to browsing, flicking, swiping and scrolling.

I had to admit for a moment, I’m a content junkie. Having no device meant I had to sit there and…do nothing.

And it felt awkward…at first.

The longer I sat, the more I realized I needed this time. As much as I have control over my business time, I was still allowing content to control much of my time…so much that I could feel the physiological disconnect.

I took 3 deep, cleansing breaths. I began to look around at the other people in conversation and a sense of calm came.

I had no schedule. There was no one to respond to. I had no responsibility. And, in that moment, I physically felt freedom.

Of course, I had to come back to life at some point. But, for that moment, I closed my eyes and hugged freedom.

I’ve already scheduled my next two freedom hugging moments.

Oh, the irony.
